It was a great pleasure to be unwinding outside of a nineteenth century Parisian cafe after the somewhat unfortunate events that had transpired at Genesis. I had then been informed that due to a reputable performance, I will find myself once again booked in a match against Trent Page, although regrettably I won’t be stepping into the ring alone with him.
“So who is Lloyd Matthews?”
Michelle inquired as she sipped, quite noisily, from her huge mug of coffee. I began restlessly wiping my finger along the rim of mine as I contemplated an answer.
“I wish I knew. But one thing is most certainly for sure; he has more chance of being Queen of England than beating me.”
“Oh, really? Isn’t that what you said about Trent Page and the rest of those guys in the battle royal?”
She jests, though naturally I can’t help becoming frustrated by it. That, in a sense, is enough of a reason for Michelle to do it, often finding an unnecessary amount of joy in my distress.
“My dear, I can assure you that was merely a quantum anomaly, one which is near impossible to occur again.”
“You sound so sure.”
She taunts.
“Roman Gladiators, giant rats, Genghis Khan’s army, Lunatian werewolves. How would our dear friends Trent and Lloyd fare in those types of obstacles? I can handle myself in any situation.”
A sinister grin stretched from ear to ear on her pale face. I daren’t question what exactly she had in mind, though I knew some sort of challenge was almost certainly coming my way. Coincidently, she often abused how stubborn I can be and she knew I would accept her challenge, regardless of whether I wanted to or not.
“Mystery tour! Take out your watch. Don’t look at it. Spin the hands and go wherever it takes us.”
“Wherever it takes us? There are millions of unsafe destinations and billions of unsafe periods of time. It is definitely the most senseless idea I’ve ever heard. Are you aware of how dangerous that would be?”
“Yes.”
“Good. As long as we’re clear.”
I reached into my jacket pocket and pulled out my white-gold watch. Excitedly, Michelle stood and linked my arm. I pushed down on the button and away we went. We then materialised in what appeared to be an advanced society. Judging by the elegant skyscrapers that surrounded us and the vehicles that glided above our heads, I would estimate we had emerged on Earth in the year 45000.
“This... is... fantastic!”
It was lucky. We could have ended up in the centre of the sun, which is always a risk when one indulges in galactic roulette. It seemed like a nice enough place. There was no litter, which is always a bonus, and the air was fresh. Something didn’t feel right though. I was overcome with the same sensation that struck me in the woods of William’s castle where I was confronted with someone of my future. She spoke of the enigma prophecy and told me I am a destroyer of worlds.
“Where are we?”
“Earth.”
“Yeah, but when are we?”
I looked down at my watch to determine whether or not my estimation was correct. It wasn’t. It was far from correct. In this vast universe, I am prone to a mistake or two, but anyone in this situation would indeed imagine that we were far into our future. They would not believe it if I then informed them that we had travelled into the past.
“It’s... 1247 BC.”
“What!? No way, check again.”
She snatched the watch from me to survey it, although she would not have any understanding of how to use the device. I looked around and noticed a small group of people slowly approaching us and at which point, Michelle hid the watch in her pocket. The people looked human, only most of them were a good twelve inches below the average height. Noticeably, there was not a female among them.
“Well aren’t you just the cutest things I’ve ever seen?”
She patronised them in a high-pitched version of her thick, Scottish accent. Her description of them was terribly inaccurate as the dwarfed men drew silver guns.
“Gentlemen, fear not. We come in peace.”
I heard an electrical charge begin to build up as a blue ball formed at the end of their weaponry.
“I don’t think they are scared.”
We began to ran, narrowly avoiding the laser that blasted towards us. They followed us as we tried to spree, continuously shooting at us until we momentarily lost them, retreating into a stylish alleyway.
“For an advanced society... not that civilised.”
“The watch!”
“So much for being able to handle everything.”
“Whilst listening to you proving your point is one of my favourite activities, I hardly think this is the right time for it.”
She reached into her pocket, but it was too late. She didn’t have time to return my watch unto me and I felt the laser penetrate my heart, delivering an electrical charge to my entire body. I had grown accustomed to a variety of ways to take me out, but in this instance, I feared I would not recover. I slowly felt myself slipping down as Michelle desperately attempted to keep me on my feet, holding me in her arms, but to no avail. Tears streamed down her face as I was gone.
Naturally, I didn’t die, although upon awakening, I thought I momentarily believed I had. I slowly opened my eyes and found myself submerged in darkness. It turns out what I had thought to be a laser was merely a sedative. I shot into a sitting position as lights slowly began to fade into existence. The mossy, stone walls were dripping with a slimy, green liquid and rusted metal bars lay like soldiers on guard in front of me. I was indeed imprisoned in some kind of dungeon. Although it was decorated appropriately for its time, it was undeniably a completely different style than the city where myself and Michelle had been. I sneaked over to the bars and gripped them, pathetically trying to pry them apart.
“I tried that. It doesn’t work.”
Spoke a perfectly charming voice. I span around and raised two flat harms as an alarm. Sat in the corner of the room was a young man. He couldn’t have been older than twenty, but his appearance was regal. He was attired in a white gown with a thick, long red cape wrapped around it. On his youthful head was a golden crown. He stood and advanced towards me.
“My name is King Greecian of Atlantis.”
“Of where!?”
“Atlantis.”
My jaw dropped. I understand that stories have to come from somewhere, but as far as Greek Mythology goes, it appears improbable; especially the story of Atlantis. Legend has it, the city was lost under the sea.
“Doesn’t take much to realise you’re not from here. May I ask who you are?”
I found it incredibly hard not to make a height joke.
“Timothy Edward Vortex.”
I informed him and he appeared to be just as shocked as I.
“Vortex? You’re the stuff of legends.”
He was one to talk.
“Hold on a minute. If you’re the King, then why are you here?”
“The sisters put me here.”
“Prey tell, sir. Who would these sisters be?”
“Atlantis was not always like this. We used to be a thriving Metropolis. We were built on top of a rift in time and space... a hole in the fabric of the universe."
He began. I knew something was wrong as soon as we arrived here. In my travels, I’ve picked up a sixth sense, so to speak, for anything that’s... timey. I listened intently as he continued.
“Through it we saw many things: The sun, the Earth and the moon. We saw other worlds and we saw the future. Things passed through from all over time and space: New technology and wisdom.”
“What happened?”
“The sisters wanted more. They stepped into the rift to absorb all the power of the universe. But something went wrong. It seems the universe had other plans for them. They absorbed different creatures and beings from other worlds. They turned into monsters.”
“Marvellous.”
I smiled as a scornful look formed on his face. I looked down at me feet in embarrassment. Clearly he doesn’t understand my fascination. Sure, we were in great danger, but when multiple alien life forms inhabit the same bodies at the same time, it is positively riveting.
“And what of the people of Atlantis?”
“Many followed the sisters. All those who made any objection were stoned to death.”
I was intrigued. I wanted to hear more from King Greecian; however the rattling the of the cell distracted me. Three burley men approached. It was hard to take them seriously due to their disproportionate size, but the guns that rested in their belts put a stop to that.
“The sisters wish to see you.”
The middle one said as he proceeded to open the door.
“I have a plan. Hold on to my arm and don’t let go. I’m gonna get us out of here.”
I whispered to Greecian, to which he replied. I reached into my pocket to retrieve my watch; however, I neglected the fact that Michelle had placed it into her jacket earlier in our adventure. Well, this was embarrassing.
“Well, then, I guess we’ll have to go to plan B.”
“What’s plan B?”
“I dunno. Let’s see shall we?”
I strode forward with my right leg, tackling one of the guards down with my black boots before immediately clutching onto the gun of a second man. Greecian proceeded to take him out with a thunderous right jab. As the third pointed his weapon at me, I hit a Roundhouse Kick to knock it out of his hands. I then connected with a headbutt which knocked him down to the hard floor below.
“Well, then. That was plan B. I love a good plan B. Shall we away?”
I began to descend down the hallways of the ancient building, seeing no sign of any time of electricity. Instead, ominous torches were nailed to the walls; their fire illuminating the way. Greecian wasn’t as eager to roam the place as I was.
“Where are you going?”
“The sisters want to see me...”
I recited and began to walk away. He displayed a great deal of reluctance, but he eventually followed, picking up a gun as he went. We walked until we reached a large opening. It was an indoor garden. Luscious green plants were dotted in between statues of what appeared to be frightened men and women. A great amount of detail had gone into every single on of them.
“Behold... the people of Atlantis.”
“Excuse me?”
“I told you they’d been stoned to death.”
“Yes, but I thought you meant hit with rocks, not actually turned into stone.”
A cold chill shot up my spine as I glanced round the morbid arena of death. An overwhelming sense of sympathy struck me as I observed the terror in the stone figures. One in particular caught me attention and I came to a halt, freezing on the spot. Greecian looked worried.
“What’s wrong?”
“Oh, my dear, I’m sorry. I’m so very sorry.”
I nervously inched my way forward towards the statue and there, made entirely of stone was Michelle.
To be continued...
“So who is Lloyd Matthews?”
