I couldn’t believe it. Michelle had trusted me with her life and I’d let her down. The Lunatian was right... I am a destroyer of worlds. She was my world. I stood there, staring at the statue in front of me as echoes from the recovered guards reached my ears. King Greecian was trying to pull me away, but it was too hard to remove my gaze. Eventually, I came to my senses. In all my time travelling, I had learnt that there’s always a way. There just had to be.
“Come on!”
Greecian begged and I complied, following him down the corridors of the hideous place. We took to our place round a corner, allowing the dumbfounded guards to wander straight passed us.
“I’m sorry about your friend.”
“Oh, dear boy, there’s always a way.”
I reassure myself. My mind was a rampant jungle, desperately trying to come up with a way to save her; however, I knew I had other important matters to consider. The entire city of Atlantis was built on top of a rift in time and space, and these so called ‘sisters’ were using it for sinister intentions. They had to be stopped.
“So that’s what happens to those who protest? Turned to stone, and then put on display to taunt the living?”
“Yes. In a way, I envy them.”
“There’s a point. You don’t follow them. You don’t do their bidding. Why then have you not met the same fate as your people?”
“I guess they couldn’t bring themselves to do it.”
“Why on earth not? You accuse them of being monsters.”
“Yes, but sometimes not even a monster can murder their own flesh and blood.”
This was not the first time my jaw reached the floor; it had become my trademark. I turned to face him and he looked away, ashamed of his unfortunate outcome of siblings.
“You’re their brother? They’re not “the” sisters, they’re “your” sisters.”
For the first time in my existence, I had found solace in being without a family of my own. It’s better to be without a family than to have the burden of the responsibilities that it can entail. He brushed past me, retaking arm before hurtling round the corner like a special agent. I followed further down the old hallway, constantly being watched by suits of armour.
“Where are we going?”
“You said it yourself. The sisters wish to see you.”
Greecian reiterated before detaching a shield from the soldier’s outfit and holding it out towards me. My blank face stared solemnly at him.
“Here, you’ll need this.”
“Dare I ask, for what purpose?”
“You’ll need it to see the sisters. One direct look at them, just one look, and you’ll be turned into stone.”
He then proceeded to take the sword from the metal suit. Suddenly, the helmet dropped off, crashing down to the floor below, startling me terribly. Of all the things I’ve got used to in my adventures, loud noises were not one of them. It was then a snake emerged from out of the suit of armour and began to slither down the floor.
“It’s true. God bless the Greeks, it’s all true.”
“What is?”
“The legend of the Gorgon, albeit a twisted conception. As the tale goes, there were three sisters... NAME 1, NAME 2 and Medusa. They were turned into monsters with serpents for hair.”
“All stories come from somewhere.”
Had he been reading my diary? Greecian knelt down on the floor, surveying the slimy trail the snake had left.
“The sisters know we’re on our way. And they’ve just given us our route.”
It was obviously a trap... nevertheless, we began to walk, quite casually might I add. As we did, I was overcome by an almost heavenly sound. Sweet music filled the air, which sounded remarkably similar to the work of Mozart. It got stronger and stronger. We were now in a tall room. The three walls were the same mossy bricks that we have become comfortable with, but the far wall looked so much more technological. Suddenly, an explosion of light was unveiled, shooting up like a beam; there was a massive array of indescribable colours, some that defied all other laws and could not be conceivable.
“It’s the rift!”
I proclaimed. The snake made a second appearance and slithered past us. Emerging from behind the rift were three hooded figures, mesmerising me. I then took note of Greecian cowardly scattering off, but I made no attempt to stop him. I understood his relationship with them and was grateful that he had helped me get here.
“Timothy Edward Vortex.”
Uttered the middle figure.
“Sisters. I know all about you.”
“And we of you. Travelling through time and space to put right what went wrong. Undoing all of our hard work. But not this time. We can’t be stopped.”
“Is that a fact?”
I cockily asked as I whipped the gun from my inner jacket. I pointed it at the three of them and they laughed. The middle then pulled her arms from behind her back, holding out my watch.
“The rift is open. Think of what would happen if I threw this complicated time device into the complicated time fissure.”
“It’s incredibly unlikely for me to allow that.”
I began to push the trigger, failing to remember that the guards were still on my trail. Two of them grabbed me by the arms and I dropped the shield onto the ground.
“Gaze into the eyes of the Gorgons.”
The three began to remove their hoods and I immediately averted my eyes, darting them down to the aforementioned shield. It was there that I saw the most hideous reflection I had ever seen. The sisters faces were cracked and the snakes were in place of their hair, wriggling around like they were trying to escape.
“You can’t do this!”
“Oh, we can. The universe is ours, Vortex! And you will watch us take over in stone!”
They inched their way closer to me as the third guard manoeuvred my head in an attempt to make me stare at the sisters. Suddenly, I heard a horrific scream. I looked up out of instinct and saw one of the sisters holding her chest, looking down at it. She then fell to the ground and stood behind her with a sword was King Greecian.
“Greecian!”
I used the two guards that had hold of me as leverage to jump up and kick the short man in front of me in the face. I then hiptossed the guard to my left over me and hit the third with an elbow. Greecian swung his sword, decapitating the second sister. A snake from Medusa’s head came loose and lunged itself at him, taking a chunk out of the King’s neck.
“No!”
I began to ran forward, but Medussa held out my watch, taunting me with it. I picked up the shield and used its reflection to see my new enemy. I ran forward.
“What about your companion?”
I stopped dead in my tracks, thinking about Michelle.
“What will you do, Vortex? The rift can save your friend, but at a price. I will escape. Will you save her... or will you stop me?”
My face dropped as I pondered my dilemma. Could I really let Medusa go? She was a murderer and if I let her go, she could start up again. She through the watch into the rift and left it to float there. I swapped glances between them. I then made my decision and stepped into the fissure, grabbing my watch. Medusa advanced towards the far wall and stepped through a sliding door. I felt the earth shake as the wall detached itself from the building, revealing itself to an aircraft. It then shot off and Medusa made her escape.
“What are you doing?”
“I told you... there’s always a way. I can use the rift and rewind Michelle’s personal timeline. All I have to do is absorb the power of the universe.”
“It won’t work! You saw that happened to the sisters.”
“But they didn’t have this watch.”
“It’s too much power! It’ll kill you!”
He held his neck as he began to pick himself up off the ground. I was fully aware of the consequences, but I had to do this. It was either me or Michelle, I couldn’t have that on my conscience.
“No!”
Greecian dived towards me, knocking me out and down to the floor, taking my place. The music was soaring through the air and the colours danced in the sky.
“I see everything.”
“Get out of there! You don’t know what you’re doing!”
“This is my responsibility. Atlantis is going down and a captain always goes down with his ship. I can see everything, Vortex. The past... the present... the future.”
“What? What do you see?”
I shouted as the rift increasingly grew stronger. Greecian smiled and looked at me.
“Enigma.”
The rift exploded throughout the room. I scurried backwards to avoid it and could see nothing of Greecian. Greecian, the bravest King that ever lived. The building began to collapse and I ran, ran as fast as I could down the hallway, dodging the bricks that fell beside me. The colours reached out, trying to grab me, but I refused to let go. I found Michelle, perfectly restored to flesh, lying unconscious on the ground. I grabbed her in my arms and at Atlantis sank, I pushed the button on my watch.
It was over. I had done it. Atlantis, the lost city. I lost it. Michelle and I had materialised in the very cafe in Paris that we had dined at before the challenge she gave me. I sat her down on her seat and took a seat myself. She came to.
“So who is Lloyd Matthews?”
I laughed in relief.
“I don’t know... but I’m sure he has a good chance of winning...”
