So here I am, deprived of the two most important aspects of my life, my good friend and my watch. I sat on Michelle’s bed, surveying the pregnancy test I located last week. I still could not begin to comprehend how this had happened. The only time the two of us were parted was on two occasions in the past year and a half. The first was when she was turned to stone by Medusa in Atlantis, and be as it may I am undoubtedly not a doctor, I’m fairly certain one cannot possible conceive whilst existing as rock. The other time was at William’s palace in France. And that’s when it hit me.
“William!”
I shot up to my feet. I love it when I know things. But how could I put this right? Michelle had been kidnapped by Trent Page who now holds the key to the universe. The events of Live-Wire flooded through my mind. I thought of how he had given me a deadline and it has finally approached. My knowledge of the watch for Michelle’s life. I have fought countless enemies from this planet and others and have saved the universe from deadly threats. However, this time, I was without a plan. I decided to journey to tonight’s venue early, hoping that it was urge some form of inspiration, and so I retrieved by dusty blue jacket and proceeded outside. But something was wrong. The street was empty. There were no parked cars, no children playing, nobody walking their dogs. This promptly transformed as an array of black vans hurtled towards me and in perfect synchronicity formed a ring.
“Go, go, go, go!”
Shouted your stereotypical army man. The doors to the vehicles flew open and the soldiers emerged; each one pointing their guns towards my head. It was then that a women made her way through the clones, attired entirely in black with her unconvincingly mysterious sunglasses.
“Mr. Vortex.”
She began. Naturally in this life I’d picked up some fans. Despite the situation, I still succumb to a giddy thrill of my acknowledgement.
“We need your help.”
I looked around at the armed men as they knelt poised against me.
“Pardon me, Miss...”
“Noir. Evelyn Noir.”
“I think I’ve become accustomed to the twenty-first century by now; surely this is not the correct form of etiquette when you require one’s assistance.”
She removed her sunglasses and stared coldly into my eyes.
“Tell me... What do you know of Ignatius Magma?”
As it happens, I knew lots. I was escorted to the base of this institution, which I have been lead to believe is far greater than any martial organisation. There was no need to lie to them, and so I explained the legends surrounding Ignatius Magma. They were twin planets, the North and the South. I had visited the South before; in fact, that was where I was first vomited out of the space-time vortex. There were volcanoes scattered around the entire globe. I was sat in a dubious black chair, confronted across the table by Miss Noir and two gentlemen whom had yet to introduce themselves, but judging from their name tags, they were named Ian Graeme and Michael Andrews.
“And that’s where the universe will end?”
I had become tired. I had a busy night ahead of me. Not only was this cutting into my plan preparation, but I also had a match against Matthew Knox that I needed to train for. I leant forward and rested my elbows on the metallic table in front of me.
“Tell me, Miss Noir. Who are you really?”
“We are ENIGMA.”
I couldn’t believe that. That word had plagued me wherever I went. It was a prophecy I was given by my future self, it was carved into that tree in France and King Greecian saw it when he stepped into the void. I was excited despite all else that I finally knew what the enigma was.
“It’s you! You’re the enigma. You scattered your message throughout space and time, but how? Why?”
“What? It’s just our initials... EN, IG, MA.”
I’m Timothy Edward Vortex. Did you really think it was going to be that simple. Still, never ignore a coincidence.
“We heard about Ignatius Magma and we plan to stop it.”
“Impossible. It’s an implosion of energy occurring everywhere, every-when, nowhere and no-when. Come to think of it... how did you even hear about this?”
Noir smiled and stood.
“Come with me.”
She invited. I could only assert that this would be of some interest to me, and who am I to turn down the invitation from a dangerously mysterious woman. I stood and followed. She lead me into a room and I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was the void... the same void that I had seen in Atlantis, only surrounded by technicians. The unimaginable colours were present as well as the Mozartesque tune that had greeted me before.
“What the...? How the Devil did you...?”
“Mr. Vortex, ENIGMA split the atom. Charged particles colliding with each other. Some scientists predicted the second big bang, but what we got was so much more. The right tone, the right frequency... and all of time and space is in our hands. We can accelerate the human race.”
“So, what, now you play God?”
“If you like.”
“Miss Noir, I am a time traveller. I explore simply to observe. You see something that no human should ever see... something beautiful... something miraculous... and what do you do? You poke it with a stick. I don’t know what you have planned, but mark my words, every one of you... I will stop you!”
It was a powerful speech, one to rival Martin Luther King. I began to fashionable storm off, refraining from a smug grin. But then I came to a halt. I heard a voice scream. It was my voice. And it was screaming “Michelle”. I turned around and looked into the void.
“And that’s how we knew we needed you. Luckily enough, Ian’s a wrestling fan and he spotted you straight away.”
As I stared into the void, I saw myself, surrounded by volcanoes. This was no reflection. I could vaguely make out the volcanoes were in the process of erupting, which is where the loop ends.
“Occasionally, things make their way through. We’ve had a number of gas leaks from the planets, particularly the North. They’re essentially harmless, but they have been known to knock a few people out for a couple of hours.”
Suddenly, an idea formed in my head. I knew I had to stop this organisation, I knew I would one day return to Ignatius Magma and I knew I would have to face the enigma, but I put all that on hold. I knew exactly how I could get Michelle back.
“Well, Mr. Vortex. It appears you are a Lost Hero. I know you have your little wrestling thingy, so you’re free to go. We don’t want to arouse any suspicion. But we will be watching you.”
Miss Noir began to escort me out of the building, but as I passed the technicians, I accidentally-on-purpose bumped into one of them, making sure I retrieved a test tube of this sleep-inducing gas. Where I learned the art of pick-pocketing is beyond my knowledge.
