Since I came to FWF, all anybody’s ever told me is that I’m just a shadow of my father. I am not my father.
“Important? And I’m not?”
William screams as the mulberry lamp is hurtled across the hotel suite, narrowly avoiding Danny, who ducks down for cover. Running out of things to throw, William picks up the white, silk pillows that rest neatly on the luxurious bed.
“I’m not saying that. But come on... you know how much this means to me.”
Danny begins. Unfortunately, that was not the right response. It never is when arguing. One word out of place and your relationship can change. In fury, William begins to toss the cushions at Danny, whom gladly accepts them as a replacement for hard objects. He quickly shuffles towards his partner, grasping him by the hands to prevent him from yielding anything else.
“You are important to me.”
Danny assures him.
“But...”
William pulls his hands away, turning dramatically away from him to gaze out of the window. He softly and calmly mutters.
“There’s always a ‘but’.”
Danny places his hand on William’s shoulder, turning him around so that they are face to face. He smiles and William looks down at his feet.
“Look, you’ve got to understand. This is something I have to do.”
He explains with little luck. William turns away again, hiding the tears that begin to emerge from his bright blue eyes. Acknowledging that he is unable to speak, Danny advances towards the door. He opens it and begins to walk out, but in a state of loyalty, he turns back. He paces up to William and kisses him on the forehead before leaving. Upon entering the corridor, Danny chuckles softly, which then turns to a harder laugh, shaking his head in disbelief. The elevator doors slide open and Danny climbs in. As the doors are sliding shut, a shining black boot jams its way in causing them to reopen. There, Benny Starr stands in a full white suit with an open collared hot pink shirt. He moves down his sunglasses to get a glimpse of the Warrior before him.
“Going down?”
Danny politely asks as Benny gets in. Benny blushes and looks down at his feet.
“Only if you hold me afterwards,”
“What?”
Benny panics.
“I mean... yes,”
He sweats. Chuckling to himself, Danny pushes a button reading ‘G’ from the panel on the wall. Benny hides his hands within his polyester pockets and rocks gently on his feet, up to his toes and then back onto his ankles, avoiding eye-contact with the former Universal Champion. After the longest twenty seconds possible, the lift grumbles to a halt. The doors smoothly pull apart again and as if escaping a gas chamber, Benny flees, retreating to the lobby of the hotel where Cerise Starr stands, waiting patiently. Danny walks past smiling and gives a gentle nod before exiting through the glass doors that lead onto the streets as the scene fades to black.
All anybody’s told me is that I’m a shadow of my father. He and my mother had a fight like this once upon a time. It was then that he walked out on her for good to pursue his wrestling career. I’m not going to follow in his footsteps. I’m positive that I can maintain a great wrestling career and keep a healthy relationship too.
The scene then reopens after last week’s Live-Wire event to a large oak door with an elegant plaque reading “FWF Chairman Pain”. Danny’s youthful hand pushes the door open and he steps in attired in his full wrestling attire consisting of a black vest with purple trim and “DDT” written across in the same colour, black tights and white boots.
“Ah, Danny.”
Remarks Pain as he stands from his black, leather chair wearing a full silver suit. He outstretches his hand to Danny, who accepts before retaking his seat. Danny sits in a chair of matching material, although lacking the pretentious back rest that Pain’s possesses. He shuffles in forward.
“You wanted to see me?”
“Yeah. It’s been a while. How’re ya coping?”
Danny ponders for a moment as he begins to peel back the wrist tape that is wrapped tightly around his left wrist. Without looking into the Chairman’s eyes, he returns an answer.
“Just fine. It’s been hard, but I’m getting there.”
“Right. And William? How’s he doing?”
“He’s fine too. Had a bit of an argument earlier, but he’ll come round.”
“Good, good.”
Pain nods along. Upon successfully retreating the wrist tape, Danny throws his eyes up at him.
“Look, Pain. This is nice and everything, but I know you. You didn’t ask me in here for just a catch up.”
“Ah, you caught me. Listen, I know you have a big match coming up at Genesis, but I saw what happened in the Elimination Chamber tonight. You could very well have been facing Christian Lee for the World Championship...”
“I don’t care!”
Danny snaps, interrupting him. Pain refrains from an outburst, understanding the situation that his friend is in.
“I’m safe in the knowledge that there are three of FWF’s greatest Warriors after Lee. Leave me to Brodd.”
“Don’t worry, you’ll get Brodd. But, he’s not here next week.”
“What!?”
Danny exclaims, shooting up out of his seat. He slams his hands against the marble desk before turning away. Now facing the walls, Danny is face to face with various framed photographs of moments in FWF’s history. He surveys them with particular focus on the picture of Dan “Dragon” Taylor shaking hands with Ernest “The Beast” Bethea from FWF ShowDown! back in 2006, which almost sooths him.
“I’ve seen that look before. Your eyes are the same as Dan’s. That fire... that passion... it consumes you.”
Danny glances towards Pain who stands and circles around the desk. He stands beside Danny, taking note of the same photograph.
“Leading up to that match, there was an Elimination Chamber... which I won...”
He digresses in hope of some recognition, which he clearly isn’t going to get at this moment as Danny is far too focussed. Pain shrugs it off.
“Anyway... Dan was in that match... and Bethea. I’m not going to go into the politics of the whole thing, but Dan thought he should’ve won that match. He thought he would have if it wasn’t for Bethea. That led to the match that made him a legend.”
“I know. Is there a point to all this?”
Pain begins to page the room before sitting back down. Danny spins on his heel to face him.
“I know you used to look to Dan for advice, but you should really listen to what I have to say. After all, I was one of the few people that could take him to his limit.”
“Sorry. It’s just...”
“You don’t have to explain yourself to me. I’m going through the same thing. Just... think about what I’m trying to show you.”
Danny smiles humbly and bows his head. He then begins to head towards the door only to be stopped by Pain.
“Oh, and Danny?”
Danny turns back around.
“You’re facing Christian next week.”
He finishes. A sadistic smile forms on Danny’s face. He nods softly once more before exiting.
I would love nothing more than for Genesis to be tomorrow. The Universal Championship has barely crossed my mind. It’s not that I’m after. I can’t wait to get my hands on Oswald Brodd. After all I’ve been through; all my frustrations are going to be taken out on him. The time of the DDT King was glorious... but it’s now my time. It’s time for the DDT Kid to start his own legacy. All anybody’s ever told me is that I’m a shadow of my father. Well, maybe I am...
